PM Tarique Rahman Pledges Full Support for Orphaned Toddler After Father’s Lynching in Faridpur

FARIDPUR, BANGLADESH — Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has stepped forward to take full financial and administrative responsibility for Muslima, the two-year-old daughter of a truck driver who was brutally beaten to death following a tragic road accident and subsequent rumors in Faridpur.
On Tuesday morning, following direct orders from the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), Boalmari Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) SM Rockibul Hasan visited the deceased driver’s ancestral home in Satair village to deliver emergency financial aid, food supplies, and toys on behalf of the head of government.

The humanitarian intervention follows the killing of truck driver Hannan Sheikh last Friday. Hannan was cornered and beaten to death by a local mob in Nagarkanda Upazila after his truck hit a group of pedestrians, injuring seven people. The accident quickly triggered aggressive rumors, culminating in the fatal vigilante attack.
Immediate Relief and Comprehensive Family Aid
UNO SM Rockibul Hasan arrived at the vulnerable family’s residence at approximately 10:30 AM, spending over an hour assessing their living conditions and speaking with Muslima’s grandparents, Shahid Sheikh and Nargis Begum.

The immediate assistance package provided during the visit included:
- Direct Cash Assistance: BDT 20,000 for immediate household expenses.
- Essential Food Stocks: BDT 10,000 worth of family provisions, including rice, lentils, flour, and basic dry goods.
- Specialized Infant Nutrition: High-quality powdered milk, suji (semolina), and dedicated child food items.
- Monthly Food Security: The local Union Parishad (UP) Chairman has been directed to issue a permanent Vulnerable Group Feeding (VGF) card ensuring 30 kilograms of free rice every month for the family.
The Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Faridpur has also pledged additional financial disbursements from his personal welfare fund to stabilize the family’s fragile economic state.
State Commitment to a Secure Future
Recognizing that the family is in a severely shattered state following the loss of their sole breadwinner, the sub-district administration has already filed an official report to the Prime Minister’s Secretariat detailing Muslima’s overall well-being and long-term requirements.

UNO Rockibul Hasan emphasized that the state’s rehabilitation framework will respect the emotional bonds of the family. While traditional state procedures often involve moving orphaned children to public welfare institutions, Muslima’s grandparents expressed a strong desire to raise the child themselves.
To honor this, the government is designing a customized, long-term support plan through the Department of Social Services and the Department of Women Affairs. This strategy will allow Muslima to remain safely in her home environment with her grandparents, backed by state funds to guarantee her education, health, and future security.
