Former Awami League MP’s wife among two jailed in Panchagarh anti-terrorism case

A Panchagarh court has ordered the imprisonment of retired army major Kazi Mousumi and local political leader Nilufa Yasmin following their surrender in connection with a terrorism case. The two women, both linked to the now-prohibited Awami League, appeared before the acting District and Sessions Judge Mahbub Ali Muayad on Monday after their six-week anticipatory bail granted by the High Court expired.

The defendants were among 47 named individuals in a case filed on July 20, 2025, at the Panchagarh Sadar Police Station. The case, which also names approximately 120 unidentified suspects, alleges violations of the Anti-Terrorism Act. Kazi Mousumi is the wife of former Awami League lawmaker Naimuzzaman Bhuiyan, while Nilufa Yasmin serves as the president of the Panchagarh district branch of the Jubo Mahila League.

The charges stem from an incident on June 23, 2025, when a gathering was held at the farmstead of former MP Naimuzzaman Bhuiyan in the Kazipara area of Panchagarh. According to the case documents, approximately 120 people attended the event to celebrate the 76th anniversary of the Awami League, an organization currently banned in the country. Participants allegedly distributed food and money while chanting political slogans.

Investigators claim the group subsequently uploaded footage of the gathering to a Facebook page titled “Awami League News.” The prosecution contends that the accused utilized the event to incite party workers, promote activities intended to threaten public security, and organize efforts aimed at destabilizing the government and creating public panic.

Defense attorney Mirza Sarwar Hossain confirmed the surrender and the subsequent denial of bail. During the hearing, the defense sought leniency by citing the health conditions of the accused, noting that Kazi Mousumi is a retired military officer who provides care for a disabled child, while Nilufa Yasmin suffers from severe health complications, including diabetes and limited mobility. Despite these pleas, the court remanded both women to custody.
