Formal charges filed against former Home Ministry officials over July uprising crimes

The prosecution filed formal charges on Thursday at International Crimes Tribunal-2 against former Public Security Division Secretary Md. Jahangir Alam and former Joint Secretary Dhananjay Kumar Das for crimes against humanity committed during the July mass uprising. The tribunal has officially taken the charges into cognizance.
Md. Jahangir Alam is currently in custody, while Dhananjay Kumar Das remains at large. The tribunal has issued an order for authorities to apprehend Das and produce him before the court.
During the hearing, Prosecutor Mohammad Zahirul Amin alleged that the former government systematically orchestrated mass killings during the uprising. According to the prosecution, both defendants participated in high-level planning sessions, including meetings of a “core committee” held at the residence of the former Home Minister, Asaduzzaman Khan.
The prosecution further stated that the two officials maintained regular access to the Ganabhaban, the official residence of the Prime Minister, where they received directives for the crackdown. Prosecutors alleged that the defendants actively supervised the implementation of these orders at the field level and failed to take any measures to prevent the lethal force used by law enforcement agencies against protesters.
