Expressway blocked in Keraniganj, alleging irregularities in the recruitment of prison guards

Hundreds of examinees protested by blocking the Dhaka-Mawa Expressway in South Keraniganj of Dhaka, alleging irregularities and nepotism in the recruitment of prison guards. Due to this severe traffic jam was created in an area of about three kilometers and the passengers suffered.
The incident took place in front of Dhaka Central Jail in Rajendrapur area of expressway on Tuesday around 11:00. Later around one o’clock the angry students again blocked the expressway.

Talking to the eyewitnesses and examinees, it is known that the physical examination for the post of prison guard was organized today. During the examination, many candidates expressed their anger by alleging that there is irregularity in the assessment of height and physical ability. At one stage, a part of the failed examinees came out of the prison and blocked the Dhaka-Mawa highway. Later, when the police reached the spot and removed the protesters from the road, they gave an ultimatum to solve the problem within an hour. However, as there was no solution within the stipulated time, they again came down on the road. At one stage they raised various slogans demanding to cancel the recruitment exam and take the exam again. Then the police tried to control the situation.
Imran Hossain, an examinee from Bhola, complained that there were widespread irregularities in the physical examination. Height should be 5 feet 6 inches for boys and 5 feet 2 inches for girls. But here those who do not obey the rules are excluded.

Another candidate Suman Sarkar said, ‘My height is 5 feet 8 inches. Still I was left out. But many people who are shorter than me have survived. I am a poor man. I have borrowed money and come to take the exam. We are forced to take to the streets due to our unfair exclusion. We want this recruitment exam to be canceled and conducted transparently again.
Deputy Inspector of Dakshin Keraniganj Police Station Liakat Hossain said, “I immediately came to the scene after hearing the news of the angry examinees blocking the road. Due to the blockade of the examinees, heavy traffic jams started on the roads. After talking to them several times, they tried to bring the situation under control. At one stage they tried to block the road again, we brought the situation under control. Later traffic became normal.
Meanwhile, the allegations of irregularities have been denied by the officials in charge of the recruitment examination. Assistant Inspector General of Jails Jannatul Farhad said that physical examination of women and men for the post of prison guards was held today. About 46 thousand 600 candidates from all over the country participated. Out of this 450 men and 22 women will be appointed. 2 thousand 613 candidates were supposed to participate in Keraniganj. Among them 1 thousand 114 people were present.
Jannatul Farhad also said that physical examination is being evaluated in several steps including height, weight, running, pushup, long jump. Only those who are eligible are selected. Ineligible candidates are eliminated at each stage. No one was intentionally left out. Those who have failed the exam are now creating chaos on the roads and trying to confuse the situation by making false allegations.
