Explosion rocks home of BNP leader in Rajshahi amid political tensions

Unidentified assailants attacked the residence of Abdur Razzak, president of the Bhabaniganj Municipal BNP and former mayor, in Rajshahi’s Bagmara upazila late Friday night. While the explosion caused alarm in the Chanpara area, local police confirmed that no injuries were sustained during the incident.
According to Officer-in-Charge (OC) Zillur Rahman of Bagmara Police Station, authorities arrived at the scene shortly after the attack and recovered three unexploded crude bombs. Evidence of a fourth explosive device, which had already detonated, was also discovered. While initial allegations suggested that gunfire accompanied the explosions, police stated they have yet to find evidence to corroborate those claims.

Razzak, who had returned home from Dhaka shortly before the attack occurred, expressed uncertainty regarding the motive behind the assault. He maintains that he has no personal enemies and is actively preparing for the upcoming municipal elections. He suggested the attack might have been intended to intimidate him in connection with the local deed writers’ association election, though he was unaware that the local administration had already postponed that vote by one week.
Local BNP members and affiliated organizations have utilized social media to blame the now-banned Awami League for the violence, though representatives from that party could not be reached for comment. D.M. Ziaur Rahman, president of the Upazila BNP, issued a formal statement condemning the attack and demanded that those responsible be apprehended and prosecuted immediately.

As of Saturday afternoon, no formal complaint or case had been filed with the police. In response to the violence, members of the Bhabaniganj Municipal BNP held a protest march through the town’s main thoroughfares, culminating in a rally at Godown intersection where party leaders reiterated their accusations against the Awami League.
