Former Public Works Minister Mosharraf Hossain passed away

Bir Muktijodha Engineer Mosharraf Hossain, former Member of Parliament of Chittagong’s Mirsrai Constituency (Chittagong-1) and former Minister of Public Works has passed away. He died today Wednesday at 10 am while undergoing treatment in a private hospital in the capital (Inna Lillahi wa Inna Ilaihi Rajiun). He was 83 years old.

Mosharraf Hossain’s death was confirmed by his eldest son Sabedur Rahman Prothom Alo. He said that his father was in the intensive care unit of a private hospital in the capital for quite some time due to various physical complications. Father died while undergoing treatment there this morning. Sabedur Rahman said, ‘My father is supposed to be buried at the village house. The time of burial will be decided by the family.

According to family sources, Mosharraf Hossain, who studied engineering, was a politician, a liberation war organizer and a successful industrialist. He became a Member of Parliament several times as the nominated candidate of Awami League (currently banned) from Mirsrai Constituency. This veteran leader served as the last member of the presidium of the party.

Detective Police arrested Mosharraf Hossain from Bashundhara residential area of ​​the capital on October 27, 2024 in connection with the attack on the BNP office in Paltan of the capital on December 7, 2022 and the killing of BNP worker Maqbul. Later he was arrested in several other cases. He was admitted to Chittagong Medical College Hospital on February 5, 2025 when he fell ill while in prison. On August 14, 2025, he got bail in all cases and came out of jail. Since then he was hospitalized due to various physical ailments including respiratory complications.
