Emergency Medical Camp Urged Amid Alikadam Measles Outbreak

BANDARBAN, Bangladesh – A measles outbreak in the remote Kurukpata Union of Alikadam upazila, near the Myanmar border in Bangladesh’s Bandarban district, has prompted a call for urgent medical intervention, including the establishment of temporary medical camps. The Chittagong Hill Tracts Accord Implementation Movement issued the demand Saturday, citing the death of four children and significant challenges in accessing healthcare.
The human rights organization, through a joint statement by its joint coordinators Zakir Hossain and Professor Khairul Islam Chowdhury, highlighted the severity of the measles infection spreading through the hard-to-reach areas of Kurukpata Union. The region’s poor communication infrastructure means public transportation is virtually nonexistent, making it extremely difficult for parents to transport affected children to Alikadam Upazila Hospital. Despite these hurdles, the number of children and their guardians arriving at the hospital from the union continues to rise.
According to reports in the media and reliable local sources cited by the organization, the measles epidemic has already claimed the lives of four children in the union.
The statement urged relevant government authorities to take special initiatives to swiftly establish temporary medical camps in Kurukpata Union and ensure the provision of medical services. Additionally, the organization called for the immediate launch of special health incentive programs to guarantee nutrition and safe drinking water for children in the affected area.
The Chittagong Hill Tracts Accord Implementation Movement also appealed to various volunteer organizations to come forward and initiate privately run medical camps in Kurukpata Union to aid the ailing population.
