Eight Die in Unusual Circumstances During Eid al-Adha Holiday in Dhaka

Authorities in Dhaka have reported eight unnatural deaths across the capital during the five-day period surrounding the Eid-ul-Adha holiday, spanning from May 25 to May 29. Local police have initiated separate investigations into each incident, with preliminary reports citing a range of causes including suspected suicides, an accidental drowning, and a fatal electrocution.
In a grim discovery on the day before Eid, police in the Darussalam area recovered the bodies of a couple, 25-year-old Nur Mohammad and his pregnant wife, 18-year-old Jhuma Akhter, from their home. According to local law enforcement, the door was locked from the inside, and the couple was found hanging from the ceiling. Investigators believe the incident may be a suicide, pending the results of forensic examinations.
Similar tragedies involving suspected suicides were reported elsewhere in the city. On Friday, police in the Bhatara area discovered the body of 24-year-old food delivery worker Monir Gazi hanging in his apartment after the landlord reported a foul odor emanating from the room. That same night, officers in Kamrangirchar forced entry into a residence to find 25-year-old rickshaw puller Md. Enajul, also known as Suman, hanging from a ceiling fan.
The capital also saw fatalities involving accidental circumstances. On Monday, 15-year-old student Muhtasim Haque Jahin drowned in a pond at the Azimpur government colony. Friends told officials that the eighth-grade student, who could not swim, entered the water despite warnings and failed to resurface. Meanwhile, a 27-year-old university student, identified as Md. Sourav, died after falling from the seventh floor of the Bashundhara City Shopping Complex. Security footage and preliminary police investigations suggest the incident was a suicide.
In another incident, 35-year-old book merchant Anwar Hossain died after stepping into a waterlogged street in Jurain. A stray electric wire from a nearby utility pole had fallen into the stagnant rainwater, leading to a fatal electrocution.
Additionally, the Tejgaon Industrial Area police reported the death of an unidentified man, estimated to be around 35 years old. He was discovered unconscious near a main road on the day of Eid and later succumbed to his condition while undergoing treatment at the Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital. Police have filed a total of eight unnatural death cases across the relevant jurisdictions as investigations continue.
