Eid Yatra: There is heavy traffic on the highways, but there is no traffic jam

Ahead of Eid-ul-Azha, homebound passengers have started to increase on the highway. There was a lot of traffic on all the highways centered on the capital Dhaka on Sunday. In some places the cars passed fast, and in some places it was slow. However, no major traffic jams were reported on the highways till eight o’clock in the night due to the activities of law and order enforcement forces including the highway police.
A holiday has been announced from May 25 to 31 on the occasion of the upcoming holy Eid-ul-Azha. Due to this, the pressure of people heading home increased on the highways from the afternoon after office today. Representatives of Prothom Alo visited Dhaka-Tangail highway, Dhaka-Mymensingh highway, Dhaka-Aricha highway, Dhaka-Chittagong highway and Dhaka-Sylhet highway.
Traffic was normal on the Dhaka-Tangail highway in the important Chandra Trimor area of Gazipur’s Kaliakair upazila from morning to afternoon. However, the traffic pressure increased from afternoon onwards.
On the other hand, the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway has heavy traffic from Bhogra in Gazipur to Cherag Ali in Tongi. Vehicles are moving in these areas. Local residents said that vehicles are not able to move at normal speed due to rain.
According to sources of industrial police, no factory was closed in Gazipur on Sunday. However, from tomorrow, the factories in the industrial area will start vacations step by step. As the number of buses, trucks, microbuses and private vehicles increased from evening onwards, there was a slowdown in some parts of Chandra Trimor, Safipur, Konabari and Bhogra border. However, there were no reports of long-term traffic jams anywhere.
The jobber was going to Rangpur to spend the Eid holiday. Saiful Islam He said, “After the afternoon, the pressure of the car increased. Due to rain, vehicles are moving slowly at some places. Still there is no traffic jam like last year. Hope to be able to reach home within normal time.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Naojo Highway Police Station Sawgatul Alam said special vigilance and patrolling has been strengthened on the highway to keep the Eid journey smooth. Additional police are deployed at important points. Quick action is being taken if there is traffic pressure anywhere.
Ashraful Alam, Deputy Commissioner of Traffic Department of Gazipur Metropolitan Police, said that a special team of the Traffic Department will be on the ground to ensure a traffic-free environment on the highways and important roads during Eid Yatra. Immediate action will be taken if there is any traffic disruption due to animal market.
From this afternoon, the crowd of people heading home has started increasing in the industrial areas Savar, Hemayetpur, Nabinagar, Bypail, bus stand. This has increased the number of long-distance transport on the Chandra highway from Dhaka-Aricha and Nabinagar.
Going to the long distance bus terminal in Nabinagar in the evening, it is seen that many people are waiting for the bus after buying a ticket for a specific destination from the bus counter. Many are waiting at the terminal to go to their destinations by other means without getting tickets.
Sathi Akhter, a garment worker, was waiting at Nabinagar long-distance bus terminal to go to Gaibandha. He did not get the ticket when he came to buy the ticket. He was waiting for a bus without a ticket. In this case, he complained that the bus fare is being asked for more. Sathi Akhter said, ‘Me and my brother have been standing for a long time for the car. The buses are asking 1 thousand to 1 thousand 200 taka. We used to go for 500 to 600 taka earlier.
Hriday Ahmed, the driver of Rajshahi-bound RK Special Paribahan, said, ‘We don’t have a counter. We went out on the occasion of Eid. Passengers will be picked up from the road as they become local. Taking passengers for 500 rupees. There has been quite a pressure of passengers on the road. He further said, “While coming to the road, I found two jams at the intersection of Elenga and Bypile. Work is going on in these two places. This can cause such a jam. Tomorrow (Monday) the passenger pressure will increase a lot, then the jam will also increase.
Savar Highway Police Station OC Shahjahan Mia said that the pressure of passengers and vehicles is gradually increasing on the highway. However, there is no danger of long-term traffic congestion. Armed police battalion force is working along with police station to ensure smooth Eid journey of homebound passengers.
Traffic pressure has started increasing on the Narayanganj section of the Dhaka-Chittagong and Dhaka-Sylhet highways. Homebound people are crowding the transport counters. While the situation on the Dhaka-Chittagong highway is relatively normal, the Meghna Toll Plaza is experiencing traffic congestion due to the slow collection of tolls.
Meanwhile, the Dhaka-Sylhet highway’s six-lane project is suffering due to rain and various parts of the highway. At several places on the highway in Jatramura, Barpa and Bhulta, the road is narrow and potholes have developed. Side shouldering potholes on highways are increasing the risk of vehicular movement.
Shamim Sheikh, OC of Kanchpur Highway Police Station told Prothom Alo that the Eid journey will be comfortable on the highway this time. Ahead of Eid, extra police will be deployed along with volunteers to avoid traffic jams. Even if there is pressure on the highway, measures have been taken so that people can return home smoothly.
Dhaka-Sylhet highway six-lane project director Md. Roknuzzaman told Prothom Alo that the work of the six-lane project has been stopped since last Sunday in order to make the journey of people homeward smooth during Eid. He said, “If there are potholes on the road due to rain, they are being repaired quickly.” Dropping the car on the side shouldering on both sides of the road creates a hole in the ground. If it is controlled, the suffering of traffic jam will be reduced to a large extent.
