Drug addiction blamed for quadruple murder of retired teacher and family in Rangpur

Disaster Management and Relief Minister Asadul Habib Dulu stated on Sunday that drug addiction was a primary factor behind the murder of retired teacher Ganapati Chakraborty and three members of his family in Rangpur.
During a visit to the crime scene in the Mashuapara area, the minister addressed reporters and confirmed that two suspects arrested in connection with the case have provided confessional statements to the court. He emphasized that the government is maintaining a zero-tolerance policy regarding the incident and promised that a charge sheet will be filed shortly following a thorough investigation to ensure exemplary punishment for those involved.
The bodies of the victims—Ganapati Chakraborty, 65, a retired teacher of Rangpur Zila School; his wife Pritilata Chakraborty, 50; their daughter Agami Chakraborty Prarthi, 25; and their 12-year-old son Ayush Chakraborty, a fifth-grade student—were discovered at their home on the night of August 22. According to police reports, all four victims died from strangulation.
Minister Asadul Habib described the incident as horrific and tragic. Based on his observations at the scene, he suggested that the perpetrators, who were reportedly drug addicts, had frequently harassed the victims. The minister posited that Ganapati Chakraborty likely confronted the suspects over their behavior, which subsequently led to the killings.
The murder case was filed at the Rangpur Metropolitan Kotwali Police Station by the victim’s elder brother, Gopinath Chakraborty. Following the complaint, police arrested Mugdho Das, son of Kanu Das, and Siddhartha Das, son of Binay Das, both residents of the same neighborhood. The minister noted that since the suspects have already confessed to the crime in court, there is no ambiguity regarding their involvement.
Addressing the broader issue of public safety, the minister identified drug abuse as a fundamental driver of deteriorating law and order. He urged for a collective social movement against narcotics, stating that the eradication of drug dependency cannot be achieved by law enforcement agencies alone. He called upon the public to collaborate in bringing drug traffickers, suppliers, and users to justice.
