Dhaka court sentences nine to five years in drug case as relative of defendant dies in courtroom

A Dhaka court sentenced nine individuals to five years of rigorous imprisonment on Tuesday in connection with a narcotics case filed in the capital’s Mohammadpur area. The proceedings, presided over by Judge Md. Nurul Islam of the Dhaka 10th Additional Metropolitan Sessions Court, also imposed a fine of 5,000 taka on each defendant, with an additional month of imprisonment in default of payment.
The case dates back to May 26, 2018, when members of Rapid Action Battalion-2 conducted a raid at the Geneva Camp in Mohammadpur following reports of illicit drug trade. Authorities seized 1,950 yaba pills and apprehended the nine suspects on the scene. Inspector Ikramul Haque Chowdhury of the Mohammadpur Police Station filed the subsequent case, and a charge sheet was submitted to the court on July 22 of that year. The formal trial began on May 27, 2019, culminating in today’s verdict after the court heard testimony from four witnesses.

The sentencing took a tragic turn inside the courtroom when Ayub Ali, the uncle of defendant Md. Mithun Mia, collapsed shortly after the verdict was delivered. Court officials reported that Ali was rushed to the nearby National Medical College Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Of the nine convicted, only Mithun Mia was present in court to hear the ruling. The remaining eight defendants—identified as Md. Murad, Shabir, Md. Raja, Md. Masum Hossain, Md. Billal, Md. Wahidul Sonu, and Md. Jumman Mia—were absent. Consequently, the court has issued warrants for their arrest, alongside the warrants of commitment required to enforce their sentences.
