Dhaka City Authorities Fine Ad-din Medical College Hospital for Sanitation and Safety Violations

A mobile court operated by the Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) fined Ad-Din Medical College Hospital 300,000 taka on Sunday following an inspection that revealed significant sanitation lapses and improper storage facilities. Executive Magistrate Aminul Islam, who led the three-hour operation, stated that the fines were levied under the Safe Food Act and the Consumer Rights Protection Act after inspectors discovered unhygienic conditions in the hospital kitchen and found sweets without labels inside canteen refrigerators.

The inspection, which concluded at 6:00 p.m., also identified that refrigerators located in various hospital wards lacked necessary temperature monitoring meters. Furthermore, officials noted a lack of adequate ventilation and lighting in some patient care areas. Hospital authorities immediately paid the fines and pledged to rectify the identified shortcomings. The operation included representatives from the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) and the DSCC, supported by law enforcement personnel.

The regulatory action comes amid heightened scrutiny of the facility following the deaths of six newborns aged between one and three days in the hospital’s delivery post-operative ward on May 27. While the cause of these deaths remains under investigation, the incident has prompted a three-member probe committee formed by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, which is expected to submit its findings on June 3. Additionally, a lawsuit filed by a parent alleging negligence has led to police questioning several hospital staff members.

Health Minister Sardar Md. Sakhawat Hossain visited the hospital on Saturday and noted the presence of an on-site bakery with standing water, raising concerns that gas emissions or environmental factors from the facility might have played a role in the infants’ deaths. Investigators are currently examining these variables.

Professor Dr. Nahid Yasmin, Director General of the Ad-Din Foundation, stated that an internal five-member committee led by the head of the urology department is continuing its own inquiry into the tragedy. Regarding the city corporation’s fine, Yasmin noted that the hospital maintains high standards of cleanliness but acknowledged that some older refrigeration units lacked external temperature displays. She confirmed that the hospital management would implement the magistrate’s recommendations to improve these technical oversights.
