Dhaka Businessman Dies After Assault Over Rent Dispute

A 62-year-old businessman died early Monday morning following a physical altercation over outstanding house rent in the Lalbagh area of Dhaka. The victim, identified as Md. Swapon, succumbed to his injuries shortly after being transported to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
Swapon, a native of Madaripur who operated a cosmetics supply business, resided in a ground-floor apartment within the Azimpur Government Medical Staff Quarters. According to his brother, Raja Md. Selim, the dispute stemmed from a minor rent arrears of 1,000 taka from the previous month. Although the balance had been settled, the landlord, identified as Rizvi, allegedly arrived at the residence around 3:15 a.m. to confront the tenants.

Raja Md. Selim stated that Rizvi arrived at the apartment and began banging on the door, using abusive language before threatening the brothers. When Swapon attempted to protest the confrontation, Rizvi and his cousin, identified as Rohan, forcibly took the businessman to a nearby field in front of the staff quarters. Witnesses allege that the two men proceeded to beat Swapon, delivering repeated punches and kicks to his chest.
Emergency responders rushed Swapon to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where he was pronounced dead by attending physicians at approximately 5:00 a.m. His body has since been transferred to the morgue for further examination.

Local law enforcement acted quickly following the incident. Sub-Inspector Motiur Rahman of the Lalbagh Police Station confirmed that both Rizvi and his associate, Rohan, have been taken into custody. Authorities are currently in the process of filing a formal case against the suspects as investigations into the fatal assault continue.
