Court orders jail for Chhatra League leader arrested for creating disturbance at Dipu Moni husband funeral

A Dhaka court on Friday ordered the incarceration of Al Rafi Pratyay following his arrest for allegedly attempting to incite unrest during the funeral prayers of Tawfiq Nawaz, the husband of former Education Minister and Awami League Joint General Secretary Dipu Moni.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Hasib Ullah Piyas denied the bail petition submitted by the defense and ordered the suspect to be sent to jail.
Pratyay was presented before the court as a suspect in a case filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act at Gulshan Police Station. Investigating officer and Sub-Inspector KM Mofizur Rahman requested that the court keep the suspect in custody throughout the duration of the investigation.
In the remand application, police stated that preliminary investigations confirmed Pratyay’s involvement in the incident. Authorities allege that Pratyay, a local leader of the Bangladesh Chhatra League, and several associates attempted to instigate instability near the Azad Mosque in the Gulshan area on Thursday afternoon. He was apprehended at the scene while allegedly chanting slogans in support of the now-prohibited political organization.
The prosecution further informed the court that evidence suggests Pratyay has led multiple rallies and meetings organized by the banned political entity. Investigators argued that his continued detention is essential to ensure the integrity of the ongoing investigation and the administration of justice.
While counsel for the accused sought bail, the state strongly opposed the motion. After hearing both sides, the magistrate rejected the bail plea and ordered the suspect to be remanded to judicial custody.
This arrest follows a broader crackdown on the Awami League, which has been effectively barred from political activities. On August 7, police detained six members of the organization during a raid at a food court in the Police Plaza Concord shopping mall in Gulshan-1, alleging they were holding a secret meeting. A case under the Anti-Terrorism Act was subsequently filed against those individuals.
Sub-Inspector Mofizur Rahman, the investigating officer, confirmed that the investigation into Pratyay’s specific activities and his broader associations is currently ongoing.
