Court grants CID 16th extension for Sharif Osman Bin Hadi murder investigation

A Dhaka court has granted the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) an extension to file a further investigation report into the murder of Inqilab Mancha spokesperson Sharif Osman Bin Hadi, marking the 16th time the agency has requested additional time to complete its inquiries. The court of Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Md. Sefatullah has set June 28 as the new deadline for the submission.
The delay was confirmed by sub-inspector Ruknuzzaman of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s prosecution department. The case follows the death of Hadi, who served as the convener and spokesperson for the platform Inqilab Mancha and had declared his intention to contest the 13th parliamentary elections as an independent candidate for the Dhaka-8 constituency.

Hadi was shot on December 12 last year in the capital’s Paltan area, one day after the announcement of the election schedule. Following the attack, he was initially treated at Dhaka Medical College Hospital before being transferred to Evercare Hospital. He was subsequently airlifted to Singapore for advanced medical care on December 15, where he succumbed to his injuries on the night of December 18.
Initially filed as an attempted murder case by Inqilab Mancha member secretary Abdullah Al Jaber on December 14, the charges were upgraded to murder following Hadi’s death. The Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Detective Branch had originally submitted a charge sheet against 17 individuals, including Faisal Karim Masud, on January 6.

However, the complainant filed a formal objection to those findings, leading the court to order a further investigation by the CID. The agency has been tasked with revisiting the evidence and circumstances surrounding the killing since that directive was issued.
