Bangladesh Seeks Chinese Technical Support for Teesta River Management Project

Prime Minister Tareque Rahman held a high-level meeting with Chinese Minister of Water Resources Li Guoying in Beijing on Thursday to forge a strategic partnership focused on the sustainable management of Bangladesh’s river systems, including the critical Teesta River project. The talks, held at the Diaoyutai State Guesthouse, centered on bolstering bilateral cooperation to mitigate flood risks, enhance environmental protection, and improve water resource governance.
During the discussions, the Prime Minister highlighted ongoing national initiatives aimed at dredging major riverways and requested technical expertise from the Chinese government to modernize the country’s water infrastructure. Emphasizing the urgent need for long-term solutions, he sought Chinese support for the Teesta River management project, alongside collaborative efforts to curb riverbank erosion, optimize irrigation systems, and develop national inland navigation.

Minister Li Guoying pledged comprehensive support for these efforts, underscoring the strength of the existing relationship between the two nations. He pointed to a 2005 memorandum of understanding and a recent fact-finding mission by Chinese experts to Bangladesh as the foundations of a research-driven, pragmatic partnership. The Chinese minister noted that Bangladesh could significantly benefit from China’s technical experience in large-scale water management and extended an invitation for Bangladeshi water experts and relevant officials to participate in specialized training programs in China.
As the meeting concluded, the two leaders reaffirmed their commitment to data-sharing and technical cooperation. Minister Li presented the Prime Minister with a commemorative volume documenting advancements in hydraulic engineering, signaling the start of a deeper phase of bilateral engagement regarding Bangladesh’s vital river resources.
