Court grants 17th extension to CID in Sharif Osman bin Hadi murder investigation

A Dhaka court has deferred the submission of a further investigation report into the murder of Inqilab Mancha spokesperson Sharif Osman Bin Hadi for the 17th time, extending the deadline to July 15. The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the police, which is currently handling the probe, failed to present its findings during Sunday’s hearing before Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Jashita Islam.
Osman Hadi, a prominent activist who had announced his intention to contest the 13th parliamentary election as an independent candidate from the Dhaka-8 constituency, was shot in the capital’s Paltan area on December 12, just one day after the election schedule was announced. Following the attack, he was initially treated at Dhaka Medical College Hospital and later transferred to Evercare Hospital. On December 15, he was flown to Singapore for advanced medical care, where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries on the night of December 18.

The legal proceedings originated from an attempted murder case filed by Inqilab Mancha member secretary Abdullah Al Jaber at the Paltan Police Station on December 14. Following Hadi’s death, the charges were upgraded to murder.
The case took a turn earlier this year when the Detective Branch (DB) of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police submitted a charge sheet against 17 individuals, including Faisal Karim Masud, on January 6. However, the plaintiff expressed dissatisfaction with the findings and filed a no-confidence petition against the charge sheet. In response, the court ordered a further investigation into the case, tasking the CID with the responsibility of identifying the culprits and clarifying the circumstances surrounding the killing.
