College student stabbed by muggers on moving train in Dhaka

A 20-year-old college student was hospitalized Saturday after being stabbed by a group of muggers on a moving train in the capital’s Banani area. The victim, Tofayel Islam, a second-year higher secondary student at Alhaj Shah Alam Degree College in Brahmanbaria, was traveling home when the assault occurred.
According to the victim’s cousin, Shiuli Akter, Tofayel had been visiting relatives in Dhaka and was en route to Brahmanbaria from Kamalapur Railway Station. As the train approached the Banani area at approximately 2:45 p.m., a group of four to five assailants confronted the student, attempting to forcibly seize his mobile phone and cash.

A struggle ensued between the student and his attackers. During the altercation, one of the assailants stabbed Tofayel in the back before fleeing the train near the Cantonment crossing area without successfully stealing any of his belongings.
Following the attack, a bystander assisted Tofayel, who was initially rushed to Kurmitola General Hospital. He was subsequently transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) around 5:00 p.m. for advanced medical care.

Inspector Md. Faruk, in charge of the police outpost at DMCH, confirmed that the victim is currently receiving treatment in the hospital’s emergency department. Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident.
