College student shot during robbery attempt in Dhaka capital

An 18-year-old college student was shot Monday night in the Manikdi Amtola area of Dhaka while returning home from a local store. Karimul Islam, an eleventh-grade student at Government Bangla College in Mirpur, was struck in both legs by gunfire during the late-night attack.

According to the victim’s father, Rafiqul Islam, the incident occurred at approximately 12:15 a.m. as his son was walking home after purchasing mosquito repellent. Two to three unidentified assailants approached from behind and opened fire, striking Karimul below both knees before fleeing the scene. The student’s family, who originally hail from Jamalpur’s Bakshiganj upazila, noted that Karimul’s mobile phone went missing during the encounter.

Karimul was initially rushed to Kurmitola General Hospital for emergency stabilization. He was later transferred to the emergency department at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) around 4:30 a.m. on Tuesday to undergo advanced medical treatment. Surgeons successfully extracted a bullet from his right leg, while the shot to his left leg had passed through the limb entirely.

Inspector Md. Faruq, in charge of the DMCH police camp, confirmed that the student received treatment at the facility. Following initial care, Karimul was discharged and returned to his family’s residence.

Rafiqul Islam stated that his son had no known personal disputes or enemies, leaving the motive behind the brazen assault unclear. Local authorities have yet to identify the perpetrators or determine if the attack was an attempted robbery.
