Chief Prosecutor Alleges Masud Uddin Behind Undue Hardship During 1/11 Government

Chief Prosecutor of the International Crimes Tribunal, Md. Aminul Islam, has identified Lieutenant General (retd.) Masud Uddin Chowdhury as the central figure behind alleged inhumane and anti-humanitarian crimes committed during the “11 January” government era.

Speaking at a press briefing Sunday at his tribunal office, Islam stated that Masud Uddin was arrested last Thursday in connection with a case involving alleged anti-humanitarian crimes during the July 2007 popular uprising. Tribunal-2 granted investigators one day of interrogation for Masud Uddin on the same day.

Chief Prosecutor Islam confirmed that Masud Uddin was interrogated on Saturday and that investigators are currently verifying the information provided.

Responding to journalists’ questions during the briefing, Islam described Masud Uddin and several others as “de facto government” figures during the “11 January” administration, suggesting they effectively ran the government. He asserted that Masud Uddin was the primary architect of the alleged inhumane acts and anti-humanitarian crimes that transpired during that period. Islam added that the tribunal’s investigation agency and prosecution are scrutinizing the information obtained and anticipate further revelations. He indicated that Masud Uddin might be interrogated again if necessary.

In response to another query, the Chief Prosecutor elaborated that Masud Uddin faces accusations related to the “11 January” period and is also linked to the July 2007 uprising. He noted Masud Uddin’s involvement in numerous activities concerning Sheikh Hasina, and that all aspects are under thorough investigation.

Islam explained that Masud Uddin was initially arrested in one specific case, which subsequently brought him under the tribunal’s purview. The investigation is not confined to a particular incident but encompasses all alleged anti-humanitarian crimes in which Masud Uddin may have been involved.
