Chairman beaten by BNP leader for rice

Local BNP leader Mostafizur Rahman has been accused of beating up the women panel chairman for making a list of VGF rice distribution to fishermen in Bhola char fashion.

Panel Chairman Minara Begum and her husband Abul Kalam Faraji were seriously injured in the attack and are undergoing treatment at Charfashion Upazila Health Complex.

On Friday (April 10) night, an incident of beating took place in Char Manika Union Parishad No. 9 of the upazila.

According to upazila senior fisheries office sources, 1 thousand 936 tons of rice has been allocated for the total of 24 thousand two hundred registered fishermen of the upazila for the full food of fishermen in February and March. Out of this, 96 tons of rice is allocated for 1200 registered jails of Char Manika Union Parishad. Panel Chairman Minara Begum was given the responsibility of distribution.

Panel Chairperson Minara Begum said that during the preparation of distribution of VGF rice according to the list of registered fishermen, the former joint general secretary of local BNP Mostafizur Rahman came up with a list of some names, omitting the names of the actual registered fishermen. According to the list given by him, VGF applied pressure for distribution of rice. When I told him that a decision would be taken in consultation with the Upazila Nirbahi Officer, Mostafizur Rahman got angry and ambushed me with his team. Meanwhile, my husband Abul Kalam came forward and beat him too.

On receiving the information, the police of South Aicha police station reached the spot and rescued the injured panel chairman Minara Begum and her husband Abul Kalam Faraji and sent them to Charfashion Hospital.

Accused BNP leader Mostafizur Rahman said that local fishermen got angry and beat him up due to irregularities in the VGF rice distribution list.

Humayun Kabir, Second Officer of Dakshin Aicha Police Station, said that the police went to the spot and brought the situation under control after receiving information about the clash with BNP leaders and activists and the panel chairman over the preparation of the VGF rice distribution list. 

Assistant Commissioner Lands and Executive Magistrate Emadul Hossain, who is in charge of the Upazila Executive Officer, said that both parties have been called to the Upazila.
