Bodies of Three Youths Remain Unclaimed in Khagrachhari Following Targeted Killings

Post-mortem examinations have been completed for three young men killed in a shooting in the Madhumangal Para area of Khagrachhari’s Panchhari upazila, but the bodies remain at the Khagrachhari Sadar Hospital morgue as no relatives have come forward to claim them. More than 24 hours after the incident, no formal case has been filed with local authorities.
Police reported that they have reached out to families through local representatives and community leaders, urging them to collect the remains. Authorities are currently waiting for the victims’ families to initiate legal proceedings; however, the police have indicated that if the families do not respond, they will file a case on their own behalf to advance the investigation.

The three victims—identified as 18-year-olds Padmo Chakma, Dhana Chakma, and Real Chakma—were killed Monday afternoon in the Chengi Union of Panchhari. Initial police reports suggested the deaths were the result of an armed clash between the United People’s Democratic Front (UPDF) and the Parbatya Chattagram Jana Samhati Samiti (PCJSS). Upon further investigation, police confirmed that the victims had been intercepted while traveling in an auto-rickshaw from the Logang area toward Panchhari town. A group of armed individuals forced the men out of the vehicle and shot them at close range before fleeing the scene.
Padmo Chakma and Dhana Chakma were residents of Rangamati, while Real Chakma was from Panchhari. Law enforcement officials recovered the bodies along with two stray bullets, 14 spent shell casings, and four live rounds from the scene. Investigations are ongoing to determine the specific motives behind the attack.

Panchhari Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md. Ferdous Wahid confirmed that no family members have visited the hospital or the station to process the release of the bodies. Meanwhile, both the UPDF and PCJSS have denied any involvement in the incident, asserting that neither the victims nor the perpetrators were affiliated with their respective organizations.
