Boalkandi Bridge area in Bogra emerges as popular weekend leisure destination for locals

The Boalkandi Bridge area in the Khanpur Union of Bogura’s Sherpur Upazila has emerged as a prominent recreational hub for local residents seeking respite in nature. Located along the Sherpur-Kazipur regional highway, the area surrounding the canal—locally known as the Parani Canal—has seen a significant increase in visitors, particularly during the monsoon season when the water levels are high.

On weekends, specifically Friday and Saturday afternoons, the area attracts crowds traveling by various modes of transport, including motorcycles, private cars, and electric rickshaws. Visitors arrive not only from Sherpur but also from the neighboring Dhunat Upazila to enjoy boat rides, social gatherings, and the scenic landscape of the surrounding crop fields.

Local visitors, including Saiful Islam and Lokman Hossain, noted that the lack of formal recreational facilities in Sherpur city drives them to the canal during the monsoon. Students and families alike frequent the area to appreciate the natural environment, often capturing the scenery on their mobile phones.

The influx of visitors has created a localized economic boost, supporting a row of approximately 10 temporary food stalls along a one-kilometer stretch near the bridge. Vendors selling refreshments such as sugarcane juice, traditional snacks, and peanuts report higher earnings on weekends compared to weekdays. Ershad Ali, a vendor, noted that he earns between 2,000 and 2,500 taka daily during the peak weekend hours, while other small-scale traders echoed similar sentiments regarding the opportunity provided by the regular crowds.

Khanpur Union Parishad Chairman Piyar Uddin acknowledged that the area’s popularity stems from the lack of government-sponsored public parks or entertainment centers in the industrial-heavy region. He highlighted that the lack of heavy industrial presence within a five-kilometer radius of the bridge preserves a peaceful, open environment that serves as an essential outlet for the local population.

As sunset approaches, the activity at the bridge continues, with boats gliding through the water and residents lingering along the banks. Despite the absence of formal urban planning for recreation in Sherpur, the natural setting of the Boalkandi area has organically evolved into a vital community space for relaxation and leisure.
