Monsoon rains have revitalized the Tulsiganga River in Joypurhat’s Akkelpur, drawing a steady stream of tourists eager to experience the region’s lush rural landscapes. As water levels have risen, the river has become a bustling thoroughfare for boat excursions, offering residents a peaceful retreat from urban life.

On Friday, a weekly holiday, several groups of families and friends departed from the Tulsiganga river ghat near the Akkelpur municipal market. Travelers set off on boats heading toward Patul and the vast Chalan Beel, navigating through the connected waterways of the Chota Jamuna River and the Atrai River.

For many, the journey offers a chance to reconnect with nature. Ashraful Islam, a teacher at a local government primary school, noted that the river takes on a unique beauty during the monsoon season. He added that the experience of watching the passing scenery from the water is so captivating that the time simply slips away, prompting him to organize annual trips with friends.

As the boats move downstream, the landscape reveals waterlogged farmlands, vibrant vegetation, and traditional village settlements. Along the banks, visitors encounter fishermen casting nets and cattle grazing, while the play of sunlight on the water during the late afternoon provides a dramatic shift in the scenery.

Local lawyer Shahidul Islam, who joined one of the excursions, highlighted the therapeutic effect of the trip. He remarked that escaping the city’s frantic pace to enjoy the river breeze and the gentle motion of the water offers a sense of tranquility that is difficult to find elsewhere.

The influx of visitors has created new economic opportunities for local boat operators. Probin Chowdhury, a resident of Keshabpur, invested approximately 600,000 taka to construct a large passenger boat, which was completed this past June. His vessel is currently being hired by groups traveling to various regional landmarks, including the Atrai Sluice Gate, Trimuhani, and Nanda Beel.

As the monsoon continues to keep the river channels navigable, boat excursions have become the primary recreational activity in Akkelpur, with travelers spending their journeys sharing stories, singing songs, and documenting the picturesque surroundings on their mobile devices.
