BGB Rejects Attempted Push-In of Indian National by BSF at Joypurhat Border

Tensions flared at the Joypurhat border on Sunday morning after Indian Border Security Force (BSF) personnel attempted to push an elderly man into Bangladeshi territory. The incident occurred near sub-pillar 27 of main pillar 279 at the Hatkhola border in Panchbibi upazila, prompting a standoff that lasted throughout the day.
The man, estimated to be between 70 and 75 years old, was initially spotted by local farmers working in fields near the border. According to witnesses, the man identified himself as an Indian national and reported that he had been forced across the border by BSF troops earlier that morning. Weak and dehydrated, he requested food and water from the villagers, who subsequently alerted the local Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) camp.

BGB personnel intervened and successfully escorted the man back across the zero line toward the Indian side. However, BSF troops refused to accept him, leading to a prolonged stalemate in which the elderly man was left sitting in a ditch at the zero line. By early afternoon, the situation remained volatile as BGB troops and local residents maintained positions on the Bangladeshi side, while BSF personnel remained on the opposing flank.
Local villagers have expressed deep concern regarding the incident, noting reports that a large number of people have been gathered near the BSF’s Mathurapur camp. Residents fear these individuals may also be subject to attempted “push-ins” into Bangladesh.

BGB Naib Subedar Mahabubur Rahman confirmed the border patrol’s role in the standoff, stating that his forces had successfully pushed back the Indian national after the initial BSF attempt to force him into the country. Authorities remain on high alert as the border continues to face an tense atmosphere.
