Begum Rokeya University forms probe committee to investigate alleged links between faculty and ousted Awami League leadership

Begum Rokeya University (BRU) has established a five-member fact-finding committee to investigate allegations that several faculty members are maintaining clandestine communications with ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and the now-prohibited Awami League.
The decision follows media reports suggesting that at least 404 teachers across 22 public universities in Bangladesh are allegedly linked to the former administration. According to an official order signed by the university’s acting registrar, Professor Md. Ferdous Rahman, the inquiry will determine whether any BRU faculty members—including those currently suspended—are involved in such activities.
The committee is headed by Md. Tanjiul Islam, an associate professor of political science. He is joined by associate professors Md. Moniruzzaman, Md. Harun-al-Rashid, and Md. Ataur Rahman, while Mosammat Rehena Akter, an assistant registrar at the university’s legal cell, will serve as the member secretary. The committee was formed with the direct approval of Vice-Chancellor Professor Md. Shawkat Ali.
Professor Rahman confirmed that the names of seven faculty members have surfaced in connection with these allegations. Among those identified are Asad Mondal of the Public Administration department and Mashiur Rahman of the Mathematics department. Both have already been placed under temporary suspension due to their involvement in the murder case of student activist Abu Sayed.
Vice-Chancellor Shawkat Ali stated that the institution is taking the allegations seriously. He emphasized that the fact-finding committee will submit a preliminary report, which will subsequently trigger the formation of an investigation committee. Based on the findings of that investigation, the university’s disciplinary committee and the syndicate will review the evidence and finalize appropriate punitive measures.
