A senior bank official died in a Dhaka hospital on Tuesday after being brutally attacked by unidentified assailants in Brahmanbaria’s Kasba upazila. Ariful Islam, 45, a principal officer at the Gopinathpur branch of Uttara Bank Limited, succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment in the intensive care unit of a private hospital.

The incident occurred Monday evening as Islam was returning home from work. According to local police and bank colleagues, the assailants intercepted the officer near Gopinathpur market and repeatedly stabbed him in the head and across his body. Passersby who heard his cries for help rushed to the scene, prompting the attackers to flee. Islam was initially transported to the Kasba Upazila Health Complex before being transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, and subsequently to a private facility as his condition deteriorated.

Following the news of his death, local business owners and residents held a protest and human chain in Gopinathpur on Tuesday afternoon, demanding the immediate arrest and prosecution of those responsible.

While the motive remains under investigation, residents noted that Islam had been living in a house shared with a man named Ali Hossain, who had recently secured a loan of several lakh taka from the bank branch where Islam worked. Locals suspect the killing may be linked to the loan or an underlying personal dispute, though these claims remain unverified.
