A 50-year-old van driver was taken into police custody in Pangsha, Rajbari, on Tuesday after local residents apprehended and assaulted him for the attempted rape of a 12-year-old madrasa student. The incident has sparked significant public outcry in the community, culminating in the suspect’s detention by law enforcement authorities.

The confrontation began on Monday morning when the sixth-grade student was traveling to her madrasa. According to accounts from the victim’s family and local residents, the suspect, identified as Zillu Mondal, intercepted the girl on a secluded path running through a sugarcane field. He allegedly restrained the student and attempted to assault her; however, she raised an alarm, prompting Mondal to flee the scene as villagers converged on the area.

Following the initial incident, local residents attempted to resolve the matter privately. Tensions escalated on Tuesday morning when a group of villagers confronted Mondal at the local madrasa grounds. Upon his arrival, a group of residents assaulted him and staged a protest demanding immediate justice for the victim.

To prevent further escalation, witnesses confined the suspect to a room within the madrasa and alerted local law enforcement. Officers from the Pangsha Model Police Station arrived at the scene shortly after, taking the suspect into custody. An eyewitness noted that while Mondal initially denied the accusations when approached at his home, he eventually confessed to the attempted assault.
