Bangladesh team sets record with clean sweep of medals at International Mathematical Olympiad

A team of six students from Bangladesh has achieved a historic milestone at the 67th International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) held in Shanghai, China. For the first time in the nation’s history, every member of the delegation secured a medal, collectively amassing 121 points—the highest team score Bangladesh has ever recorded in the prestigious global competition.
Competing against representatives from 117 countries, the Bangladeshi team earned one silver and five bronze medals, securing the 39th position globally. The silver medal was awarded to Md. Raihan Siddiqui, a twelfth-grade student at Chittagong College. The five bronze medals were claimed by Tahsin Khan (Ananda Mohan College), M. Jamiul Hossain (Rajuk Uttara Model College), Jawad Hamim Chowdhury (Dhaka Imperial College), Monami Zaman (Viqarunnisa Noon School and College), and Mohammad Marzuk Rahman (Chittagong Cantonment English School and College).
To celebrate this achievement, a formal reception was held at the University of Asia Pacific in Dhaka. During the event, keynote speaker and physicist Professor Mohammad Ataul Karim, former executive vice chancellor of the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, lauded the students for their performance. He emphasized that the medals represent the start of a journey toward greater scientific and professional challenges, urging the youth to maintain their curiosity and ethical standards in an era dominated by artificial intelligence.
The success of the national team is the culmination of a movement that began in 2001. Since Bangladesh officially joined the International Mathematical Olympiad in 2004, the country has garnered one gold, eight silver, 45 bronze medals, and 47 honorable mentions. The annual initiative is organized by the Bangladesh Mathematical Olympiad Committee, under the sponsorship of Dutch-Bangla Bank PLC and the management of Prothom Alo.
Speakers at the reception, including Prothom Alo editor Matiur Rahman and committee president Professor Mohammad Kaykobad, highlighted that the Olympiad has evolved into a national movement for science and creative thinking. While celebrating the international recognition, officials underscored the need for these students to remain humble and continue their intellectual growth, noting that the success was made possible through the collaborative efforts of academic mentors, volunteers, parents, and organizers.
Reflecting on the achievement, former committee general secretary Munir Hasan reaffirmed the significance of the feat, noting that the total sweep of medals across the team marked a new standard for Bangladeshi students on the world stage. Coaches and academic staff highlighted that the momentum generated by these math competitions has successfully facilitated the expansion of other academic disciplines, including physics, informatics, biology, and chemistry, further elevating the standard of science education across the country.
