Bangladesh Secures Record Performance at 67th International Mathematical Olympiad

Bangladesh achieved a historic milestone at the 67th International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) in China, as all six members of its national team secured medals. The team earned a combined score of 121, the highest in the nation’s history, securing the 39th position among 117 participating countries and regions.

The competition, which concluded its evaluation phase this week, saw Mo. Raihan Siddiqui of Chittagong College lead the national contingent by securing a silver medal with 23 points. Teammates Tahsin Khan, M. Jamiul Hossain, Jawad Hamim Chowdhury, Monami Zaman, and Mohammad Marzuk Rahman each earned bronze medals, completing a clean sweep for the squad.

A total of 666 pre-university students participated in the prestigious event, which required them to solve complex problems in geometry, combinatorics, number theory, and algebra over two days. The results, officially announced on the IMO website, follow a rigorous evaluation process that determined thresholds for gold, silver, and bronze medals. China topped the team rankings with 232 points, followed by the United States and Russia.

This year marks Bangladesh’s 22nd participation in the IMO. Since joining the event in 2005, the nation has accumulated one gold, eight silver, 45 bronze, and 47 honorary mentions. The selection process for the national team was extensive, involving over 51,000 students from 19,000 educational institutions who navigated multiple regional and national selection rounds organized by the Bangladesh Mathematical Olympiad Committee, with the support of Dutch-Bangla Bank and Prothom Alo.

Team leader Mahbubul Alam Majumder praised the students’ performance, noting that their ability to solve highly challenging problems demonstrated significant growth compared to previous years. “This success serves as an inspiration for Bangladesh to aim for even greater heights in future international competitions,” Majumder stated.

The six-member team participated in an intensive training camp in China prior to the event, an experience deputy team leader Apoorba Kumar credited with helping the students apply their skills effectively under pressure. The closing ceremony and award distribution are scheduled to take place at the Shanghai High School grand auditorium on Monday.
