Bangladesh Police Roll Out New Uniforms Following Official Design Overhaul

Bangladesh Police officially transitioned to a new uniform on Wednesday, marking the latest phase in a series of shifts following the country’s recent political upheaval. Officers were seen wearing dark blue shirts, light olive-colored shirts, and khaki trousers as they resumed their duties across the capital.
The new attire was prominently featured during the inauguration of the newly constructed Barkau Police Camp in the Purbachal New Town project. Inspector General of Police (IGP) Ali Hossain Fakir and Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Mosleh Uddin Ahmad were observed wearing the updated uniforms during the ceremony. According to Additional Inspector General of Police (Crime and Operations) Khondaker Rafiqul Islam, the rollout is being implemented in phases, with officers wearing the new gear as it becomes available.
The decision to change the uniform follows a period of significant institutional transition. Following the collapse of the previous government on August 5, 2024, calls for police reform intensified, leading to a shift in uniform design in late November. However, those changes met with mixed reactions from within the force and the public. Under the current administration, the Police Headquarters issued a notification on June 18 finalizing the latest color scheme and design specifications.
The updated guidelines standardize the look across various units, with district police and specialized branches adopting dark blue shirts and khaki trousers. The regulations also provide comprehensive standards for winter and summer apparel, including jerseys, cardigans, and jackets. Specifically, the new mandate replaces previous grey-toned sweaters with dark blue alternatives to match the shirts.
The revised policy also introduces new options for female officers, who are now permitted to wear sarees with coordinating blouses—dark blue for district police and light olive for metropolitan units. The directives further clarify that female officers may opt for head coverings and, if necessary, wear specialized attire during pregnancy with the approval of unit commanders. These changes aim to balance operational functionality with the evolving requirements of the force as it continues its reform efforts.
