Bangladesh Observes Ashura With Solemn Processions and Mourning Rituals

Muslims across Bangladesh observed Ashura on Friday with solemnity and religious fervor, commemorating the martyrdom of Imam Hussain (RA), the grandson of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). The day marks the anniversary of the tragic events on the plains of Karbala in 61 Hijri, where Imam Hussain and his family members sacrificed their lives in a stand for justice and truth against tyranny.
In Dhaka, thousands of Shia Muslims participated in traditional Tazia processions, wearing black mourning attire as a symbol of grief. The main procession commenced at 10 a.m. from the historic Hussaini Dalan, with participants marching barefoot through the streets. Chanting “Ya Hussain, Ya Hussain” while beating their chests, the mourners carried religious symbols including banners, alams, and replicas of the horse Duldul.
The procession wound through several key areas of the capital, moving from Bakhshibazar, Science Laboratory, and Jigatola before concluding at Dhanmondi Lake, where the symbolic Tazia was laid to rest. Beyond the main gathering at Hussaini Dalan, approximately 30 other Imambaras across the city, including those at Boro Katara, Mohammadpur, Purana Paltan, and Moghbazar, organized independent processions and religious assemblies to mark the occasion.
The significance of the day remains rooted in the enduring legacy of Imam Hussain’s sacrifice, which continues to serve as a global symbol of resistance against injustice. Throughout the country, local communities organized various rituals and prayers to honor the sanctity of the day.
To ensure the safety of participants and the peaceful conduct of the processions, law enforcement agencies maintained a high-alert presence throughout the country. Security measures were further bolstered at major Imambaras, where authorities utilized closed-circuit television cameras to monitor the proceedings and ensure a secure environment for all observances.
