Bangladesh Navy Takes Custody of Mysterious Underwater Drone Found Off Barguna Coast

A mysterious underwater vessel discovered by fishermen off the coast of Pathargata in Barguna has been handed over to the Bangladesh Navy for further investigation. Local police confirmed the transfer on Tuesday, noting that the object, which sparked widespread curiosity after being netted Sunday afternoon, is now under formal military custody.

The roughly eight-foot-long, red-and-yellow device, resembling an automated underwater vehicle (AUV), was retrieved from the Bay of Bengal by local fishermen. Following its recovery, the object was initially held by the Coast Guard before being transported to Dhaka for expert analysis. While Coast Guard officials declined to comment on the record, sources indicated that the Navy will lead the forensic examination and technical assessment of the hardware.

The device features a cylindrical, torpedo-like design with stabilized propellers at the rear. Upon inspection, the exterior reveals internal electronic modules, battery units, sensors, and communication equipment. Experts suggest the craft is likely an AUV, a sophisticated tool commonly deployed globally for oceanographic research, climate monitoring, seafloor mapping, and military surveillance.

Marine biologists and researchers are now debating how such a device entered Bangladesh’s territorial waters. Mohammad Abdul Aziz, a professor of zoology at Jahangirnagar University, noted that the vessel appears to have been inactive, likely drifting into coastal waters after experiencing technical failure or power loss. He emphasized that since such technology is not standard in local research operations, the origin and intended purpose of the vehicle warrant a thorough investigation.

The recovery has drawn significant attention from the scientific and defense communities, as sightings of such technology in the Bay of Bengal are rare. Researchers like Mir Mohammad Ali of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University underscored the importance of the discovery, noting that a definitive technical analysis could provide critical insights into international marine research, regional security, and climate monitoring activities currently taking place in the Bay.
