Bangladesh Mob Vandalizes and Torches Market Following Fatal Village Clash

Tensions in Brahmanbaria’s Sarail upazila escalated into violence on Monday as residents of two villages engaged in a destructive clash following the burial of a man killed in a prior altercation. The unrest centered on the Kalikachha Bazar area along the Sarail-Nasirnagar-Lakhai regional highway, where hundreds of individuals launched coordinated attacks on local businesses.
The conflict originated from a financial dispute between Mosharraf Hossain of Suryakandi village and Hadim Mia of Dharmatirtho village. The disagreement, which began with a verbal confrontation on Sunday evening, spiraled into a violent clash involving sticks, machetes, and brickbats. During the initial fighting, 55-year-old Hadim Mia sustained fatal injuries from a spear-like weapon, leading to his death.

Following the victim’s burial on Monday afternoon, emotions flared among his supporters. Shortly after 6:15 p.m., a large mob from Dharmatirtho village descended on Kalikachha Bazar, targeting over 100 business establishments owned by residents of Suryakandi. The attackers ransacked shops, looted merchandise, and set fire to several structures, effectively paralyzing the regional highway for more than two hours.
Local police attempted to disperse the crowd using tear gas, but the rioters persisted, and the situation deteriorated into a renewed skirmish between the two factions by 7:00 p.m. Law enforcement officials eventually restored a semblance of order by 8:30 p.m. after deploying additional reinforcements and firing warning shots into the air.

Mohammad Jahangir Alam, Assistant Superintendent of Police for the Sarail Circle, confirmed that the violence erupted immediately after the funeral services. Authorities remain on high alert as they work to stabilize the area and prevent further retaliatory attacks.
