Bangladesh launches nationwide 250 million tree planting drive as government pushes for locally manufactured electric ambulances

Prime Minister Tareque Rahman has called for a strategic approach to nationwide afforestation, emphasizing that tree selection must be tailored to local soil characteristics and environmental conditions to ensure higher survival rates and ecological stability. Addressing officials during a meeting at the Prime Minister’s Office on Saturday, Rahman stressed that planting trees in harmony with local geography is essential to addressing the growing threats of climate change and shifting seasonal patterns.

According to the Prime Minister’s Press Wing, Rahman highlighted that the declining forest cover has contributed significantly to the increasing unpredictability of weather patterns, such as the disruption of regular monsoon rains. As part of a broader commitment to environmental preservation and securing a sustainable future for the next generation, the government has launched a massive initiative to plant 250 million trees over the next five years. The Prime Minister is scheduled to formally inaugurate this campaign on June 14 at Dulahazara in Cox’s Bazar.

The meeting was attended by Environment and Forest Minister Abdul Awal Mintoo alongside senior government officials, including Chief Secretary ABM Abdus Sattar and environment ministry leadership, to finalize the implementation framework for the national greening project.

In a separate session chaired by the Prime Minister later that day, the administration unveiled plans to develop domestically produced electric ambulances to enhance public health accessibility. This initiative aims to reduce the nation’s reliance on costly vehicle imports while providing modern medical transport across three distinct tiers: village-to-upazila, upazila-to-district, and district-to-capital connections.

The proposed electric ambulances will be engineered specifically to navigate the country’s unique geographic and road infrastructure challenges. Officials noted that the vehicles will be equipped with oxygen support and essential life-saving medical apparatus, with a pilot program scheduled to launch in a selected upazila to serve as a national model.

Health Minister Sardar Md. Sakhawat Hossain and a panel of experts from the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) participated in the discussions. The government expects that local manufacturing will not only lower operational costs for emergency medical services but also ensure a more robust and sustainable healthcare delivery system nationwide.
