Bangladesh government scales back ministerial police escorts to optimize resources

The government has revoked police escort privileges for 18 cabinet ministers in Dhaka, a move aimed at streamlining protocol and optimizing state resources. Under the new directive, these security details have been withdrawn to prioritize operational efficiency across the capital.

Following the decision, the privilege of police escorts will be restricted to a select group comprising six ministers and one advisor. This core group includes Minister of Local Government Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, Minister of Home Affairs Salauddin Ahmed, and Minister of Finance and Planning Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury.

The initiative was spearheaded by the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Dhaka Metropolitan Police at the behest of the Prime Minister. Officials cited the necessity of fuel conservation, a shortage of available transport, and a broader commitment to reducing the burden of excessive official protocol as the primary drivers for the policy shift.

The restructuring is expected to have an immediate operational impact, reallocating 90 police personnel and 18 escort vehicles to other critical security duties.
