Bangladesh and Nepal Call for Revitalization of SAARC Amid Strengthening Bilateral Ties

Acting Speaker of the National Parliament Kaiser Kamal and Nepalese Ambassador to Bangladesh Ghanshyam Bhandari met in Dhaka on Wednesday to discuss regional cooperation, focusing on the revitalization of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC).

During the meeting at the Parliament Secretariat, the Acting Speaker emphasized the historical significance of SAARC, noting that it was founded by the late President Ziaur Rahman to foster development through regional synergy. Kamal expressed his conviction that the organization remains a viable platform for achieving collective progress and urged Nepal to take a proactive role in restoring its efficacy. Ambassador Bhandari signaled his agreement, acknowledging the necessity of strengthening regional ties.

The discussion also explored the potential for deepening bilateral relations through parliamentary diplomacy. Kamal proposed the activation of parliamentary friendship groups between the two nations, suggesting that such a mechanism would facilitate the exchange of legislative experiences, promote good governance, and enhance mutual cooperation in international forums. He noted that these groups could serve as a vital link to improve people-to-people contact and address shared regional challenges.

Highlighting the scope of economic cooperation, the Acting Speaker pointed to the ongoing efforts regarding electricity imports from Nepal as a template for future collaboration. He identified several key sectors for potential expansion, including education, culture, energy, regional connectivity, trade, and climate change mitigation, arguing that both countries must capitalize on these opportunities to secure mutual prosperity.

Ambassador Bhandari lauded the transition currently underway in Bangladesh under the leadership of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman. The diplomat expressed his commitment to working more closely with the current administration, underscoring Nepal’s interest in supporting Bangladesh’s new journey toward democratic stability and strengthened bilateral engagement.
