Bagerhat Tensions Surge as Jamaat Offices Attacked Following Farmer Leader Murder

Tensions between the BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami have escalated in Bagerhat following the murder of a local farmers’ party leader, leading to a series of retaliatory attacks on Jamaat offices across the region. Badol Morol, president of the Barui-para Union unit of the Jatiyatabadi Krishak Dal, was killed by unidentified assailants in Fakirhat on Tuesday night, triggering an immediate and violent backlash.
On Wednesday, groups of demonstrators targeted multiple Jamaat-e-Islami facilities. Reports indicate that the party’s ward office in Barui-para and the local office of the Sramik Kalyan Federation were ransacked during the afternoon. Earlier that morning, another party office in Arpara village was reportedly vandalized and set ablaze. Jamaat leaders claim that BNP activists are responsible for the destruction and have been issuing threats against their members.

Sheikh Md. Mohiuddin, the Barui-para Union Jamaat Ameer, alleged that the attackers disabled nearby CCTV cameras before destroying the properties. He denied any Jamaat involvement in the murder of the Krishak Dal leader, calling for a swift investigation and condemning the use of the killing to incite further violence against his party members. Despite the political friction between the two organizations, Mohiuddin maintained that there was no prior enmity severe enough to warrant such aggression.
In response to the killing, a protest procession was held in Barui-para bazaar on Wednesday, where demonstrators chanted slogans against Jamaat-e-Islami, demanding the destruction of what they termed “the dens of killers.”

Syed Nasir Ahmed Malek, president of the BNP’s Bagerhat Sadar unit, dismissed reports of coordinated violence, claiming that while there were minor incidents, no organized vandalism had occurred under his party’s direction. He asserted that the BNP had issued strict directives for members to remain within the bounds of the law and urged authorities to conduct an impartial investigation into the murder.
Bagerhat Sadar Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge Shamsul Arefin confirmed that authorities are aware of the vandalism reports but have yet to receive formal complaints. He noted that the situation in the area remains calm following the burial of Morol on Wednesday evening.
District Jamaat Ameer Rezaul Karim issued a formal statement expressing deep concern over the murder and the subsequent retaliatory attacks. He called for the restoration of public order and demanded that law enforcement agencies identify and prosecute those responsible for the initial killing to prevent further destabilization in the district.
