Airport Thana Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal leaders expelled following gold jewelry robbery charges

The Dhaka Metropolitan North unit of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal has expelled two of its student leaders following allegations of gold robbery. The expelled officials are Ripon Hossain, president of the Airport Police Station unit of Chhatra Dal, and Al Amin Hossain Shanto, the unit’s general secretary.
The disciplinary action was confirmed in a press release signed by Shibli Sadik Shiblu, office secretary of the Dhaka Metropolitan North Chhatra Dal. The statement cited specific breaches of organizational discipline as the grounds for the expulsion. The decision, approved by the Dhaka Metropolitan North unit president, Salahuddin Ahmed, and general secretary, Mahfuz-ur-Rahman Lipkon, also directs all party members to sever all organizational ties with the accused individuals.
The charges stem from an incident on August 28, when a Malaysian expatriate named Kawsar Hossain sent 200 grams of gold jewelry to Bangladesh for his sister’s wedding. According to the police report, the recipient’s brother, Mohammad Sumon, and his friend Rohan collected the gold at the airport. Upon leaving the premises, they were intercepted on the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway by Ripon Hossain, Al Amin Hossain Shanto, and two local leaders of the Airport Police Station unit of the BNP, identified as Abdur Rouf and Rubel.
The victims alleged that the assailants identified themselves as members of the Awami League and Chhatra League and threatened them with explosives before assaulting them and seizing the jewelry. A case was filed by Mohammad Sumon at the Airport Police Station on August 29.
Police arrested Al Amin Hossain Shanto and Abdur Rouf on the night of August 10 in the airport’s Sector 1 area. Authorities reported recovering 100 grams of the stolen gold from the suspects.
Following their initial one-day remand, the suspects were produced before the court on Monday. The investigating officer, Sub-Inspector Sabbir Hossain, requested that they remain in custody. Although the defense counsel argued for bail on the grounds of a private settlement between the parties, Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Hasan Shahadat rejected the petition and ordered the suspects to be sent to jail.
