Accused pair in Dhaka child murder case brought to court for indictment hearing

The primary suspects in the rape and brutal murder of an eight-year-old child in Dhaka’s Pallabi area were brought to court Monday morning to face formal indictment. Sohel Rana and his wife, Swapna, arrived at the Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s court via prison van shortly before 8:00 a.m. and were placed in separate holding cells pending the start of proceedings at the Metropolitan Tribunal for the Prevention of Violence Against Children.
Court official Ripon Molla confirmed that the defendants are being held in custody and will be presented before the tribunal as soon as the presiding judge issues the necessary directives.
The case stems from a gruesome discovery on May 19, when the dismembered body of the young victim was recovered from a third-floor apartment in Pallabi. According to investigators, Sohel Rana fled the scene by breaking through a bathroom window immediately following the incident. While law enforcement apprehended his wife, Swapna, at the residence that same day, authorities tracked down Rana later that evening in Fatullah, Narayanganj.
Following the victim’s father filing a formal complaint at the Pallabi police station, the investigation moved quickly. On May 20, Rana appeared before Metropolitan Magistrate Aminul Islam Junaid, where he provided a confessional statement admitting to the rape and subsequent murder of the child.
The incident has sparked widespread outrage across the country, with various civil society groups, political organizations, and members of the public voicing intense condemnation of the brutality.
