Accused of obstructing the MP in Tarakanda’s New Year celebrations, ‘clashes’ with BNP supporters

While participating in the New Year ceremony, the supporters of the defeated candidate of BNP and the supporters of Mymensingh-2 (Phulpur-Tarakanda) Constituency Member of Parliament Muhammad Abdullah quarreled and clashed. Later, with the intervention of the administration, the situation was brought under control and the program started. The incident took place at Tarakanda Upazila Parishad at around 10:30 am on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, the 11-party alliance protested this incident around 4 pm today. The procession ended from Tarakanda Dakshin Bazar to Upazila Parishad.
According to local sources, on the occasion of the new year, cultural programs and national anthem performances were organized in Tarakanda Upazila Parishad auditorium and hall. Member of Parliament Muhammadullah and Mymensingh North District BNP Joint Convenor Motahar Hossain Talukder went there to join it. Arguments, shoving and at one point scuffles broke out between supporters of both sides as they entered the venue.
It was alleged by the member of parliament that some of his supporters including his nephew Mahadi Hasan were beaten up in this incident. He also alleged that BNP leaders and activists attacked and vandalized his Iftar event last Ramadan too.
Tarakanda Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Tanveer Ahmed said that there was a scuffle and scuffle between supporters of both sides entering the venue. The situation was later calmed down. Law and order situation is normal.
Member of Parliament Muhammadullah claimed that his supporters were stopped while entering the venue. When he met Motahar Hossain Talukdar and tried to exchange greetings, the situation became heated. He alleged that his supporters were beaten up at the behest of the opponents.
However, Mymensingh North District BNP Joint Convener Motahar Hossain Talukder denied these allegations. He said that he met the member of parliament while entering the event venue by marching with the students. At that time, even though there was a small argument, he went and calmed the situation down. He claimed that there was no major clash.
Tarakanda Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Aminul Islam said that there was a brief scuffle between the supporters of the two sides. Later, the program was started after normalizing the situation on the initiative of the administration. After the inauguration ceremony, the member of parliament went elsewhere.
It should be noted that Muhammadullah won the election as a candidate of Bangladesh Khilafat Majlis in Mymensingh-2 constituency. His rival was BNP candidate Motahar Hossain Talukder.
