Tea stall owner struggles to support quadruplets born prematurely in Rajshahi

A tea stall owner in Rajshahi is struggling to provide for his family after his wife gave birth to quadruplets at Rajshahi Medical College (RMC) Hospital. The four infants—two boys and two girls—were delivered via caesarean section on the night of August 17.
The newborns, born to Tisha Khatun and her husband Naimul Islam, arrived at 34 weeks gestation, earlier than the typical 38 to 40-week term. Due to their premature birth and low birth weight, the infants were placed under observation in the hospital’s Special Care Newborn Unit (SCANU). While a birth weight of 1.5 to 2 kilograms is considered more stable, the quadruplets weighed between 1 kilogram and 1.3 kilograms at birth. Following a week of medical care, they were discharged on August 24.
Naimul Islam, who operates a small tea stall in the Court Station area of Rajshahi city, stated that his modest income is insufficient to cover the sudden expenses associated with caring for four infants. The family resides in the city’s Ward 8.
The father reported difficulty in accessing government welfare support. He claimed that when he approached the local ward office for assistance, he was told he did not qualify because his wife’s age was not yet 21; however, official records indicate that Tisha Khatun is 21 years and 7 months old.
In addition to the ward office, Islam sought assistance from the Paba Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) before the children were born. Despite submitting the required documentation after spending an entire day in line, he said he has yet to receive any form of aid. The family is now calling for urgent financial support to help manage the care of the four children.
