Intern Doctors Launch Indefinite Strike at Bogura Medical College Hospital Following Clash With Patients Relatives

Intern doctors at Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital in Bogura have launched an indefinite work stoppage following a violent clash with the relatives of a deceased patient. The altercation, which occurred late Tuesday night, resulted in injuries to six intern doctors, according to medical staff.
The incident took place around 11:00 p.m. in the medicine ward on the seventh floor of the facility. According to hospital reports, Abdul Malek, 55, a resident of Rajapur area in Bogura Sadar Upazila, passed away due to complications from asthma. His relatives allegedly became aggressive following his death, leading to a heated argument and a subsequent physical confrontation with the medical staff on duty.
Intern doctor Ritu Mondal stated that the medical staff has commenced an indefinite strike, demanding guaranteed security for healthcare workers and immediate legal action against those involved in the attack. Another intern doctor, Azraf Islam, was reportedly assaulted while attempting to intervene during the altercation, which escalated when other colleagues rushed to assist. Medical staff claims that six interns sustained injuries, with some suffering broken bones.
Hospital authorities have deployed senior and mid-level physicians to maintain medical services during the strike. Deputy Director Monzur E. Murshed confirmed that Abdul Malek’s death was not the result of medical negligence or error, noting that additional senior doctors have been assigned to shifts to prevent any disruption to patient care.
Police intervened at approximately 3:00 a.m. to rescue six individuals who had been detained by the intern doctors following the clash. Those taken into custody have been identified as Nafiul Islam, Pranto, Rakibul Hasan, Munna Sheikh, Biplob Sardar, and Tanvir Sheikh. Law enforcement officials noted that four of the detainees are identified as members of the Chhatra Dal, the student wing of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party.
MR Hasan Palash, General Secretary of the Bogura District Chhatra Dal, stated that he is aware of the incident and promised organizational action if any party members are found involved in the assault.
Ibrahim Ali, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Bogura Sadar Police Station, confirmed that the six individuals are currently under police custody, with four receiving medical treatment for injuries sustained during the encounter. The hospital administration has yet to file a formal case or establish an investigative committee. The OC stated that legal action will proceed once a formal written complaint is filed by either party.
