Renowned Bangladeshi artist and cultural figure Mustafa Monowar remains in ICU after health decline

Renowned Bangladeshi cultural icon and artist Mustafa Monowar has been receiving intensive care at a private hospital in Dhaka for the past four days, sparking concern among his family and the artistic community.
The veteran artist was admitted to Square Hospital on Sunday after his physical condition deteriorated significantly. His wife, Merry Monowar, confirmed that medical staff moved him to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) after clinical assessments revealed alarming drops in his blood pressure and oxygen saturation levels.
Monowar has been grappling with various age-related health complications for some time. In September 2024, he was placed on life support before making a partial recovery. His current hospitalization follows a recent bout of pneumonia caused by a bacterial infection, which further compromised his already fragile health.
A multifaceted figure in Bangladesh’s cultural landscape, Monowar began his career as an educator at the Government Institute of Arts and Crafts. He is widely recognized as the pioneer of puppet theater in the country and left an indelible mark on generations of viewers through his innovative children’s programming on television.
In recognition of his lifelong contributions to art and culture, he was awarded the Ekushey Padak in 2004 and the prestigious Sultan Gold Medal by the Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy in 2018.
