Nation Observes 50th Death Anniversary of National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam

Bangladesh is observing the 50th death anniversary of National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam, a literary icon whose work remains a powerful voice against injustice and an anthem for humanism and equality. The poet passed away on 12 Bhadra, 1383 of the Bengali calendar, at the then-PG Hospital, currently known as Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University in Dhaka.

To mark the occasion, the Kazi Nazrul Institute has organized a series of commemorative events, including a discussion titled “Mrityunjoyi Nazrul,” alongside prayer services and performances of Hamd and Naat. Numerous other cultural organizations and institutions have also scheduled programs throughout the day to honor the poet’s enduring legacy.

Born in the village of Churulia in West Bengal’s Bardhaman district on 11 Jaistha, 1306, Kazi Nazrul Islam was affectionately known as “Dukhu Mia.” Despite enduring profound poverty throughout his childhood, he emerged as a transformative figure in Bengali literature. His active creative career spanned only 23 years, yet his extensive body of poetry, music, and literature ignited a renaissance in Bengali culture. His writings have served as a source of inspiration for generations seeking liberation from exploitation and oppression. Known as the poet of eternal love, Nazrul once famously described himself as holding the flute of love in one hand and the war trumpet in the other.

Following the independence of Bangladesh, Prime Minister Sheikh Mujibur Rahman took the initiative in 1972 to bring the poet and his family to Bangladesh from India with the consent of the Indian government. Upon his arrival, he was bestowed with the status of National Poet and provided with a residence in the capital’s Dhanmondi area.

The recognition of his contribution continued throughout his stay in Bangladesh. In 1974, the University of Dhaka conferred upon him an honorary D.Lit degree. In 1976, the government of Bangladesh granted him citizenship, and in February of that same year, he was honored with the prestigious Ekushey Padak.
