Four Arrested in Kishoreganj Over Youth Murder After Five Months

Four suspects have been arrested and skeletal remains recovered from the Narsunda river in Kishoreganj after police cracked the mystery behind the disappearance and murder of nineteen-year-old Arif Mia following a dispute over local drugs

Detectives in Kishoreganj have unraveled the mystery behind the disappearance and murder of 19-year-old Arif Mia, also known as Salman, after a hiatus of five months, arresting four individuals in connection with the crime. The breakthrough came on Saturday afternoon (October 19) during a press briefing held by Superintendent of Police Mohammad Mizanur Rahman at his office, where law enforcement detailed the gruesome recovery of 77 human bones, including a skull and rib cage, from the Narsunda River.

The victim had been missing since the evening of May 18, when he left home for the Ilim Bazar area to socialize with friends. Failing to return, his distraught family conducted extensive searches before filing a general diary at the Hossainpur Police Station the following day. The District Detective Branch subsequently took over the investigation, utilizing digital technology to analyze mobile phone communications and movement patterns, which ultimately exposed the direct involvement of Arif's close associates.

Following nearly five months of uncertainty, the victim's father, Fazlul Rahman, lodged a murder case naming unidentified suspects at the Hossainpur Police Station on Friday morning (October 18). Prompted by the case filing, a specialized team from the Detective Branch launched a raid in the Bishwanathpur area of Pakundia and apprehended the four suspects, identified as Shakib Mia, Md Mafi, Rafiq Mia, and Ramzan Mia.

According to Superintendent Mizanur Rahman, preliminary investigations revealed that an altercation erupted among the group while they were consuming locally manufactured narcotics. During the dispute, Arif struck Mafi with a bamboo stick, provoking the other individuals to snatch the stick and beat Arif to death. The perpetrators subsequently concealed the body beneath water hyacinths in the Narsunda River to obliterate evidence.

During initial interrogations, the detainees confessed to hiding the corpse in the river. Acting on their statements, police conducted a targeted drive and recovered Arif's t-shirt alongside the 77 skeletal remains. Law enforcement authorities have prepared an inquest report for the recovered bones, sending them for post-mortem examinations and DNA profiling, while simultaneously petitioning the court for remand orders against the arrested suspects. Expressing profound grief over the telephonic interview, the victim's father demanded exemplary punishment for those responsible for luring his son away and executing his brutal murder.
