Mother and two children found dead in Dinajpur home following family dispute

Police have taken the husband into custody for questioning following the tragic incident in Dinajpur

Police recovered the lifeless bodies of a young mother and her two children from a residence in Dinajpur's Chirirbandar upazila on Sunday evening (Oct 29). Law enforcement authorities have initiated an investigation into the tragic incident, with preliminary assessments pointing toward a harrowing case of filicide followed by suicide driven by intense domestic strife.

The deceased have been identified as 24-year-old Sworna Akter, wife of local easy-bike driver Shakil Hossain (28), and their two young children: four-year-old Safayet Hossain and one-year-old Raifa Moni. The grim discovery was made around 7:00 PM at their home in Mostafapur Balupara village, located under Amarpur union of the upazila.

According to local accounts, Shakil Hossain had allegedly struggled with drug addiction for a prolonged period, a destructive habit that frequently ignited bitter domestic disputes between the couple. Tensions reportedly boiled over again on Sunday morning, culminating in a heated argument before Shakil left the house for the local market.

Family members recounted that as evening approached, Sworna retreated into the bedroom with her two children and bolted the door from the inside. When the silence persisted for an unusually long time, Shakil's mother grew alarmed, approached the room, and repeatedly called out to them. Receiving no response, she alerted neighbors who ultimately forced open the door to find the three tragic victims.

Local Union Parishad member Nur Amin Shah noted that the tragedy appeared to stem from unresolved family feuds. Investigators also uncovered a handwritten note scrawled on the bedroom wall. The poignant message read: The story ends from today. Do not hand my children over to the police. I am an unfortunate mother. I killed them myself. Mom and dad, sorry. I love you.

Chirirbandar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mahmudun Nabi confirmed that law enforcement personnel rushed to the scene immediately after receiving the alert and recovered the bodies. Preliminary findings suggest the mother strangled her children before hanging herself amid mounting family turmoil. Police have taken the husband, Shakil Hossain, into custody for questioning, while legal procedures are underway to ascertain the exact circumstances surrounding the deaths.
