Former Additional Secretary Dies After Fall at Dhaka Officers Club Building

Former Additional Secretary Md. Mosharraf Hossain (72) succumbed to his injuries on Thursday night (October 31) after being rescued in a critical, bloodstained condition from the ground floor of an under-construction building inside the Officers' Club in the capital's Ramna area earlier yesterday morning. Police have preliminarily surmised that the retired bureaucrat suffered fatal internal injuries after accidentally plunging from an open void on Basement-1 down to the floor of Basement-3 within the incomplete structure.

Detailing the sequence of events, Ramna Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md. Yasin Mia stated that Mosharraf Hossain had visited the Officers' Club at approximately 10:00 AM on Thursday to accompany his younger daughter for her swimming lessons. After leaving his daughter near the swimming pool, he entered the adjacent under-construction building. At around 11:15 AM, fellow patrons and staff discovered him unconscious near the staircase on the ground floor and rushed him to the Birdem General Hospital in Shahbagh. Acting on medical advice, his attendants subsequently transferred him to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital at approximately 11:45 PM, where the on-duty physicians officially pronounced him dead.

Investigators reviewing closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage recovered from the club premises observed that the deceased had been repeatedly ascending and descending the levels of the building, indicating he may have lost his way inside the sprawling, unfinished construction site. At a certain point during his disorientation, he fell through the open gap on the first basement level. Law enforcement officers have already completed the preliminary inquest report of the deceased.

Authorities confirmed that the family members expressed their reluctance to conduct an autopsy, prompting police to arrange for the body to be handed over to the grieving relatives for burial without a post-mortem examination.

The deceased, an esteemed member of the Officers' Club, resided in a house on Road 5 in the capital's Banani area, while his ancestral roots trace back to Deovuna village in Munshiganj Sadar Upazila. Police noted that his wife passed away earlier, and his elder daughter currently resides in the United States. Funeral and burial proceedings will be formally finalized upon her return to Bangladesh.
