Dhaka University Hosts Three-Day Workshop on Applied Income Tax and E-Return Filing

Dhaka University has launched a three-day intensive workshop titled “Applied Income Tax and E-Return Submission,” aimed at providing hands-on training for bankers, finance professionals, entrepreneurs, and tax administrators. The event, which adopts the theme “Learn, Practice, File with Confidence,” held its inaugural session on Saturday at the Professor Abdullah Farooq Multipurpose Hall within the Faculty of Business Studies.

Organized by the university’s Department of Banking and Insurance in collaboration with the Master of Tax Management (MTM) Alumni Association, the program is designed to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application. Over the three-day course, participants will engage in expert-led sessions covering recent changes to the Finance Act of 2024, e-return submission methodologies, tax compliance, tax deducted at source (TDS), advance income tax (AIT), as well as audit and litigation management.

Professor Mohammad Shahidul Islam Zahid, Chairman of the Department of Banking and Insurance, presided over the opening ceremony. He noted that the initiative serves as part of the department’s 22nd-anniversary celebrations. While acknowledging that tax payment is a civic duty, Professor Zahid emphasized that many taxpayers find the submission process overly complex and expressed hope that the workshop would equip participants with the technical skills to overcome these challenges.

The Chief of the Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit (BFIU), Ikhtiar Uddin Md. Mamun, highlighted the critical role of tax revenue in stabilizing the national economy, which he described as currently facing a “low-equilibrium” state due to inflationary pressures and rising non-performing loans in the banking sector. He argued that forcing revenue collection without fostering economic growth is unsustainable, urging a shift toward increasing taxpayer awareness and simplifying compliance procedures to stimulate broader economic activity.

Professor Mahmud Osman Imam, Dean of the Faculty of Business Studies, stressed the ethical responsibilities of tax professionals. He warned that professionals must distinguish between effective tax management and tax evasion, advising them to provide clients with strategic, legally sound financial planning rather than merely completing forms. He noted that building professional trust through transparent advisory services is essential for the sustainability of the tax profession.

The inaugural event also featured remarks from Sonali Life Insurance PLC Director Fouzia Kamrun Tania, Professor Hasina Sheikh, and MTM Alumni Association President Mustaba Ishtiaq Ahmed. The training continues on August 28 and 29, with sessions scheduled from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. The program will conclude on August 29 with a certificate-giving ceremony for the participants.
