Bangladesh Government to Purchase Surplus Rooftop Solar Power at 10.50 Taka per Unit

The government has announced a new policy to purchase surplus electricity generated from rooftop solar power systems to bolster national energy security. Under the directive issued on Tuesday, the government will procure surplus power from residential and commercial consumers at a rate of 10.50 taka per unit, which will subsequently be fed into the national grid.
This financial incentive is restricted to consumers who install rooftop solar systems equipped with battery storage by February 28, 2027. Systems installed after this deadline will not be eligible for the special pricing structure.
The purchase price of 10.50 taka per unit was calculated by factoring in the estimated production cost of 8 taka per unit—based on current market trends and recent tenders—along with a 20 percent profit margin and an 11.25 percent premium.
According to the notification, consumers must prioritize their own usage before supplying the surplus energy to the national grid. Power distribution companies have been tasked with measuring the supply, maintaining accurate records, and processing payments. To ensure transparency, all payments will be disbursed directly to consumers via bank accounts or mobile financial services, with cash transactions strictly prohibited.
To qualify for this scheme, all components of the solar installation, including panels, batteries, inverters, and meters, must comply with the technical standards set by the Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institution (BSTI) and the Sustainable and Renewable Energy Development Authority (SREDA).
The Power Division has established a one-stop service center to provide policy support for applicants. Furthermore, technical assistance and information regarding the installation process are available at the district and upazila-level offices of all power distribution companies.
